Feliz Ano Novo!
For our first bottle release of the new decade we've gone back to a group of beers we hold a special reverence for and which we dub "boozy Belgians" - those big, complex Belgian ales that have been brewed for centuries. And then we've treated it with a bit of irreverence and aged it in a barrel that these styles of beers rarely see.
This one was brewed quite a while ago, on 16 August 2017. It's had a journey that ended with almost two years in Tawny Port barrels. Tawny Port (which is basically adding brandy to wine which halts fermentation) is the most famous of the fortified wines, orange-brown in colour and praised for its depth. We shipped these barrels to use from across the pond in Portugal, home to Port Wine. The marriage of the Port flavours and the roast and boldness of the Belgian Dark Strong plays out as a great marriage does: melding and elevating together.
The goal here is that the fortified wine barrel addition will warm and strengthen the already dark and strong ale to fortify itself against the dark and strong Canadian winter.

500 ml bottle - split 2 ways.
Dark tawny brown pour with creamy tan head - some particulate in the dregs.
Aroma of rich dark fruit, raisin, date, hint of molasses, bread pudding with vinous notes - port wine.
Taste is slightly boozy bread pudding, dark malt, raisin, brown sugar, a bit earthy/oaky. Some distinct notes of the port wine, a hint of complex cherry tartness.
Full mouthfeel - slightly boozy with a sharp edge of sweet tartness, finishing with a level of astringency.
