For reasons that are our own, we love releasing a beer on the shortest day of the year. There's something undeniable about the act of celebrating the dark. Celebrating the darkness as it creeps closer and celebrating it as it fades away.
And oh man, is that ever apt on a year like this one.
It feels trite in a way to focus on something that we spend every focussing on, though, so instead we'd like to simply focus on the beer.
A beer that takes our Perepllut Barley Wine through a two-and-a-half year residency in red wine barrels from cooperages in France and America. A beer that has the backbone and the boldness to change and become greater. It's now richer, more rounded, and, well, better in so many ways.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a dark brown with a reddish hint. Head quickly disappears. The nose is heavily influenced by the red wine, in a great way. Red wine, a bit of brown sugar, an earthy note, and wood. The taste follows the nose. This is very red wine forward, but man did they do a good job here. This could have gone sideways, but it is such a nice smooth taste. Red wine (dominant), toffee, brown sugar, bread, wood, figs, plums, wheat, and apples. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, and the alcohol is not detectable. Overall, a really fun experience. The only thing I would note is that if I were handed this blind, I might not be able to guess that it's a barleywine.

Solstice 2021 release after a long stay in barrel!
Pours a murky reddish brown colour with scant khaki head that does not stick around.
The aroma has a prominent oaky vinous note - earthy with dark fruit, cherry, and molasses - the vinous nature is a little overwhelming, but diminishes as warms.
Taste follows again with flavours of red wine, oak, cherry, and some molasses/brown sugar sweetness; just a hint of tartness in back.
Medium mouthfeel - thinner than expected with muted carbonation, a bit of boozy warmth but not clear I would have guessed 13+% ABV.
Not at all bad, but not sure I am a big fan of the wine barrel. Have another bottle which I think shall sit on for a year or so.
