2023 Best in Show Canadian Brewing Awards
The story of this beer doesn't start with us, or with our brewery. It starts in the 1940's with Dr Les Kerr and Robert Simonet at a small farm in Saskatchewan. There, they had this idea that cherries could be grown on the prairies, in hardiness 2 zones, and where they first crossed Mongolian and sour cherries to create a new branch of plant genetics: Prunus cerasus L. Seedlings eventually made their way to the University of Saskatchewan where research and breeding intensified and where today new cultivars are being developed and released.
This beer uses a true melange of cherries from the Romance series of dwarf sour cherries and it's our prediction that in the next decade you'll see these cherries at your local grocer. It's a blend of Juliets, Carmine Jewels and a few other varieties. The base beer (a Rustic Saison) was brewed in January 2021 and spent a year in one of our oak foeders and then another year on the cherries. It is heavily fruited, which is intended to showcase the profound fruit flavours and aromas. And if it helps, this is my favourite beer we've ever made.

2023 version - 6.39% ABV - 2023 Canadian Brewing Awards Best In Show.
Caveat - I really do not enjoy sour beers (though technically this is a fruited saison) for the most part, but felt obligated to give this a try, sharing a 500 ml bottle with others who do….
Pours a clear dark red colour - not unlike a ripe cherry - with a small pinkish bubbly head.
Initial aroma is quite phenolic and a touch funky - wondered if Brett were involved but this largely blew off giving way to a nose of ripe cherry, cherry pie, and an acetic note.
Tastes of slightly tart/under-sweetened cherry pie, has a jammy character - though tart with a bit of a vinegary note there is a definite sweetness and a bready malt in back as well.
Medium mouthfeel with decently brisk carbonation and a sweet tart cherry finish.
Again not a sour fan but could definitely drink anytime.

500ml bottle poured into tulip. I don't really feel like aging it, so I'll just hafta enjoy it in all it's brand-new glory.
Pours a pretty cherry red with one finger of sudsy pink bubble bath lace that leaves ragged sheets of lace as it recedes.
Smells of mostly cherry pie, mixed berry jam on toast, red wine vinegar, some crispy grain, a whiff of cheesy funk and a bit of faded hops.
Tastes of more vinegar sourness, cold cherry pie, more jammy breakfast toast, more ephemeral funk and hops, and some grainy caramel malt.
Feels light and zippy. Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Finishes sour.
Verdict: Highly recommended. A pretty intense but pleasant sour.
