Our expression of a classic Double IPA, Mother Handsome is brewed with a funky blend of African & American hops. It is meticulously balanced, slightly bitter, with a hop aroma of currant, citrus, stone fruit, and fresh herbs.
We named it in tribute to the 19th century tavern owner of local Ferndale legend. Not only did she quench the thirst of many a weary soul traveling the Saginaw Trail between Detroit and points north, the tavern floor doubled as a rooming house. So, while you can't crash at our place, we are happy to provide you with a tasty respite from a long day!

16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 12/29/2016. Pours slightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with awesome retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Great dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pear, apricot, pineapple, mango, melon, white grape, currant, berry, citrus peel/rind, pepper, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and bready malt notes; with solid strength. A bit too malty aroma. Flavors of big tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pear, apricot, pineapple, mango, melon, white grape, currant, berry, citrus peel/rind, pepper, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pear, apricot, pineapple, mango, melon, white grape, currant, berry, citrus peel/rind, pepper, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance; and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, and fairly sticky/resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.5%. Overall this is a delicious DIPA. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/resinous/drying finish, not overly aggressive. Great mix of juicy, dank, and earthy hop complexity; sizable malt backbone, but not overly sweet/heavy with adequate lingering bitter dryness. Stated mix of American/African hops. Feels like Chinook/Columbus for the citrus/pine/resins; and African Queen for the stone fruit/berry notes. A very enjoyable offering, with a unique hop profile. Held up just fine for the age of the can too.
