12th May 2012 saw me on a pub crawl of Shrewsbury: second pub being ‘The Loggerheads’ and a hand pulled pint of this.

Being ‘Mild in May’ month I thought this would tick all the boxes and it almost did.

Medium to semi-dark brown; with an off-white head of deep foam.

Aroma was thin and weak: some malty molasses and fruit cake, but not much of anything really.

The taste was better: Malt loaf with candid fruit bits hanging around.

Medium bodied for a Mild and hid the 4.5% ABV fairly well: an OK beer more than a ‘must try again’ brew.

This arrived the week before at the Rose and Crown but was not available for serving until this week. Color was a beautiful dark red, and being hand pumped of course had no head.

Not much of an aroma, but what is there is pleasant, floral.

The taste was quite good, going very well with my chicken pasta alfredo.

Felt fine in the mouth, less watery than many of the cask ales.

Gravity poured, so there is not much head to speak of (i.e., it's headless). But the body is a nice, dark mahogany with glints of fiery orange. The smell is weak - this goes beyond mild, I'm afraid. Somebody nearby is eating pork and the smell of that totally intercepts the extremely frail yet noticeably floral and nutty aroma of this beer as it makes its way into my nostrils. Pleasant orange, cherry, and cola notes emerge as the pork-eating man finishes his meal and the piggy smell ebbs. Bland and flat on the palate; hops dominate, but only because the malts don't put up much of a fight. Vaguely citric and fruity with distant toast, cola, nut, and biscuit notes. Dry and quick in spite of low carbonation. Not a particularly interesting or tasty ale, and it doesn't have the advantage of being refreshing, either. Quite a mediocre mild.
