Pale copper colour, small residual head. Hop aroma, slight floral notes. Taste is of floral hops, slightly sweet. A bitterish finish but short. An OK beer.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of May 2013. Picked up from Booths a little while back. A single-hop pale ale with Sovereign as the variety used. The label describes it as floral and understated. There is also a subtle nod to the Diamond Jubilee, though it isn't explicitly mentioned.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A clear, bright amber colour with faint haze and light carbonation. Forms a large head of frothy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a thin surface layer. Aroma of earthy, grassy hops with a slight hint of anise, underpinned by mild grainy malt and yeast. A tad too restrained.

Tastes of light caramel malt with a dry finish. Notes of grain, grass/hay, earthy yeast, faint spice and stewed hops. A mild herbal quality in the background, and a restrained, dry bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with pleasing carbonation and good body. Somewhat astringent, with an aftertaste of bitter stewed hops and grass.

Unspectacular. It's nice to see a larger brewer branching out into newer beer styles (or perhaps they're feeling the heat?), but this won't knock anyone's socks off. The flavour/aroma is pretty subtle and not disimilar to many other run-of-the-mill ales. Having said that, it's well-balanced and crafted with care - there are no flaws to be found. The mild flavour is partly due to the deliberate use of a single hop variety, resulting in a traditional pale ale character. I don't love it but it's drinkable enough. Try it if you want to discover the understated finesse of Sovereign hops.

500ml bottle: best before 31 May 2013, poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard at home on 08 Oct 2012.

Orange/light amber body with a good, deep head of white foaming bubbles on top.

The nose is a sharp floral/fruit tartness: so is the initial taste, really tangy feel to the carbonisation and body. Crisp and sharp flavours, would have liked some maltiness to off-set the hop front, back and sides. This is refreshing but lacks depth and isn't really balanced in its flavours.

One for the hop heads who don't want to be blown away but prefer the hops to dominate the taste. It's a strange brew because although it is hoppy, it isn't overly dry or bitter. I wonder if it would mellow given a few months?
