Served at room temperature into pint mug.
A) Very opaque, black with reddish tinge. Thin tan head that reduces quickly to a film.
S) Not a lot, even at room temperature. Oddly, for a 4.5% beer, the main smell is alcohol, perhaps with a bit of liquorice and chocolate.
T) Weird slight gingery / peppery taste at the front. The roasted malt flavour is there in the middle, but it is week and the acidity from the relatively high carbonation masks it from being enjoyed properly. No bitterness whatsoever. Very slight hint of coffee in the aftertaste.
M) Too fizzy for a stout, but not unpleasant as a beer in general.
O) Not one for stout aficionados, but perhaps one to introduce newcomers into the style at a low price and without fear of it being too bitter / strong / roasty.

Look: very dark brown, light brown head that doesn't last long
Smell: caramel and a bit of coffee, faint but pleasant
Taste: roasted malt and toffee, definitely not overwhelming (rather faint actually), very pleasant bittersweet aftertaste
Feel: quite powerful mouthful, the medium carbonation is very effective to bring the deep hop aroma to the nose
Overall: an unexpected surprise, given the brand and the price. It's a relatively complex and very pleasant beer that gets better and better while drinking - probably due to the temperature increase. In fact, I've found this stout to give its best around 16-20° C, the smell in particular gets much more present and pleasant.

Bottled in simplistically designed body
Dark black, almost no head. Malty aroma with a bit of fruitcake. Lots of CO2; overcarbonated. Thin and watery, with not much complexity in the flavor: a bit of malt, a bit of roasted coffee beams, not much else

Purchased at the local branch of the Tesco supermarket, this is a Tesco-branded brew and in fact the label doesn’t specify the brewery. Coming in a 500ml brown glass bottle, BB 31/10/2013, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass. Notes: The malt ingredients include Pale Ale Malt, Malted Wheat, Caramel Malt, Black Malt, Roasted Barley and Chocolate Malt, while the hops used include Tetra Hop Gold, Goldings, Sovereign, Fuggles, Progress, Admiral and Bobek.
A: pours a pitch black hue with a thin creamy dark khaki head, on top of rather smooth carbonation.
S: moderately roasty with burned and oily nutty aroma, gristy dark malts, chocolates, but not sweet overall, while the hops elements have the Fuggles as the dominating theme with an earthy and dried herbal signature. Pretty settled and not pronounced overall.
T: rather light-bodied on the entry, the flavour is dominated by roasted barley and semi-sweet, slick dark and caramel malts, hinting at some chocolates and burned nuts; hops reveal themselves more in the fashion of a moderate-level bitterness with a dry-ish and spicy edge, without any hop variety taking over the stage with its unique aroma. Mildly bitter and faintly lactic in the short finish.
M&O: mildly carbonated on the mouthfeel, somehow the body comes too light but then again the flavour profile doesn’t shine in any way either… Despite so many different malt and hop varieties used in the brew, I’m surprised to have picked up so little distinctive flavours and aroma altogether. I wonder if it is to do with the expiry date approaching? If not, then this beer really is a fake peacock…
