Pint pour on draught at the brewery. It pours a pretty iced tea color with orange and ruby hues, and it sports a fluffy, ecru-colored had and thick, creamy lacing. A most attractive pour. The nose is rather subdued with caramel malt, pine needles, lemon, grapefruit, and vanilla. Wow, this is an interesting and tasty beer! It opens with soft notes of caramel and vanilla but they're well-balanced by resinous pine sap. The tart, bitter citrus nicely compliments the resin and sweetness. It packs a lot of flavor and the balance is excellent. This ale is medium-bodied with an appropriate level of carbonation, and the 8% ABV gives it good substance. Overall, I agree with the brewery's description of this IPA as "unique." I've never had one quite like it - sort of a hybrid Red and Black IPA. It's an original recipe, well executed; and the best beer I've had from Backward Flag yet.
