A U
UNGESPUNDET NATÜRTRÜB

After “A” comes “U” The “U” stands for “Ungespundet”, which means unfiltered and outrageously good. Simply pronounced, “Ahh Ooo”, like the two vowels, means you would like a U beer. No language skills required, and you finally have a great beer that doesn’t take a long time to order. What comes to your table, if one orders a U? You’ll get an extraordinary, yeast-turbid specialty beer with a full-bodied smooth-malt character. Pleasantly tart and lightly carbonated, it is a beer that goes just as well with a good meal as it does with a relaxing evening after work. Did somebody say, “cult beer”? Yeah, why not. That’s fine with us. Sure, you could always say “one” U. But experience has taught us that that’s rarely the case. Mahrs Bräu U beer pairing recommendation: with cold cut platters, Eisbein/Haxen, hearty dishes with dark meat.

COLOR: cloudy, amber

HOP: Hallertauer Perle

YEAST: Bottom-fermented

The name itself makes your tongue twist. Your brain as well.
Drink it straight out of a barrel in your cellar with a friend. No cheese, no charcuterie, no junk. Just beer. Pair with... another beer.
Roland told me to drink this because they were of Grevensteiner.

0.5l bottle into a glass mug.
Sulfuric nose with yeast. Smells like primal beer. Herbatious arrival with alot of soapwort, blueberry bush. Develops into dry graham crackers and burlap. Followed by a deep muddiness, silt and clay in a field. Muted banana and apricot, calm apple cider. Pronounced sweetness, meadlike. Finishes in a mystical roundness like a bronze sphere at the bottom of a forest tarn. Sourdough crust. Mouthfeel starts mellow and finnishes coarse.

Distinguished beauty. Sadly has little to offer the average beer palate.

Copenhagen 10/9 2020. 50 cl bottle from Mikkeller web-shop. Brown label with a white silhouette of an angel.

Pours unclear, golden yellow with s small white head. Settles as thin, frothy layer of foam crawling up the sides of the glass. Moderate lacing.

Aroma is moderately intense with a sweet, fruity and malty odor and a light sourness. Sweet pale malts, bread and grains. Light odor of citrus peeking in.

Light carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, soft, almost flat texture.

Flavor is medium intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a medium strong bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter. Lingers for a while. Semi-dry finish.

A subdued nose but with a decently bitter flavor.

I had this on draft 9/11/24 @ Laschet's Inn.

Semi-opaque dark orange rust appearance.

Big khaki head; strong, frothy lacing remained.

Autumn leaf, faint pine & faint brown sugar notes in the nose.

Soft, medium thick mouthfeel.

Autumn leaf & soft rye bread flavors.

Pleasant, pillow-y but with some heft. Borderline great, but not one you could quaff all day.

thin foam recedes quickly. amber, light brown color. Sweet smell of bread balanced with hops. Tastes is very well balanced. Bread sweetness but not too sweet, not caramel like. Hops balance malts perfectly. Well rounded dry finish. Best Kellerbier I tried.

Bright brass with a tower of off-white froth; proofing dough + floral soap on the nose; soft white bread, granola sweetness, hint of yellow apple tartness, coriander seed + burnt grass; clean, fizzy, bitter.

4 4 4 3.75 3.75

There’s some nice Munich crunch to the malts, a sturdy bitterness and all around smooth balance.
So why don’t I like this beer more?
Maybe I can’t reconcile the pils hopping + Marzen malts. Maybe the carb is too high, the colour too clear + the finish too soft. Maybe breweries like Ganstaller are slightly modernizing this style to make it far more interesting.
Good food beer, easy sipper, etc. etc. - and sure, I can see why it gets a cult following, but this is somehow not one I’ll chase again.

De Labirratorium. En copa hefe de Bavaria. Jugando a Fortnite (victoria). Corpulento perfil maltoso con un buen contrapunto amargo y quizás con algo de oxidación pero de la que sienta bien

Pours amber with a 1/2 inch white head, which dissipates. No lacing. Hazy. Suspended particles.

Aroma is malty, yeasty, bready, grassy.

Taste follows nose: malt, yeast, bread, grass.

Light bodied, light carbonation. Dry finish.

A nice unfiltered lager for quaffing on a hot summer day. A bit past the best by date of 6-27-20, probably explains the lack of a lasting head and lacing.
