Pours a clear golden color with a medium top off white head that dissolves quickly.
Aroma is of bread, sweet malt, grains, honey, grassy and herbal hops.
The taste is sweet and grassy with bready malt notes in the background. The finish is quite bitter with grainy notes allong with grassy and herbal hops. Mouthfeel clean and crisp with a medium carbonation and a medium body.
A nice and enjoyable maibock.

Found this at a semi-local I used to frequent a lot more. Their imports were dying on the shelves, and it showed. I think they've cleaned up their act a little, so fingers crossed.

No date to be found on the .5l brown bottle.

L -- Pours a rather hazy straw-to-golden color with a persistent, creamy white head.

S -- Aromas of bready malt and lightly spicy to citric hops.

T -- Big, sweet, tasty, bready malts up front with that light graham cracker character. The sort of malt flavor that's only found in fresh German lager. The breadiness lingers through a sample with the mildest of herbal & bitter hops in the finish to balance out the sweetness.

F -- Mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a light-medium body, very good to-style.

O -- This is a terrific rendition of a Heller Bock. Great malt character that begs gulp after gulp. The only ding in the scoring is the lack of good lager clarity, not sure why it's so cloudy. Makes me wish I was sitting at Mahr's Bierhall in Bamberg -- next best thing.

Poured on tap into a full Becher glass at Chuchkey.

Minimal collar presented but what an interesting looking brew. Light pale bronze, no head presented, but a real unique washed out but still light golden color. White tan collar presented with excellent carbonation and clarity.

What a killer aroma. Classic dense German malts, and a whiff of bubblegum of all things. Dense as all can be, slightly minty, and with a big sense of husky malt and sense of thickness coming. Crazy wicked stuff.

Palate matches just more of the notes on the aroma. Thick controlled body with lots of malt depth and coating. Mint and almost peppery finish with a sweet caramel and bubblegum candy. Hints of peppermint, and dense malt, thick grain, chewy mouthfeel all over.

A real interesting bock from these guys, and from a great brewery.

500 mL bottle, no date.

Deep gold color with a slight haze to it from being unfiltered. Small white head with good retention. The nose consists of sweet malty goodness but it's not too heavy, as some bocks can be. Also getting the slightest bit of fruit in the form of apple/pear in there as well. Rich bready malt flavor with very light herbal hops. Medium bodied and very smooth going down. Super clean tasting despite being both unfiltered and unpasteurized. Not the most complex bock, but among the most accessible and easy to drink. A winner in my book.

Pours with a one-finger light brown head that leaves a good lace. Cloudy amber color, with a few chunky bits. Medium bodied and light-medium carbonation. Malty nose. Starts sweet finishes with some soapy overtones, not a great bock. $3.25 for a 500ml bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

Bottled on date "1205"

Gold in color. Quite hazy. Bubbly off white head. Sparse lace. Aroma is grainy and sweet. Similar to all others of theirs. The palate brings me sensations of dusty malts, cereal grains and sweet malts. Not too bad. But not that great either. It's pretty sweet, but not quite in the annoying cloying realm. Body is medium-full and the carbonation is on the low side. Gives it a bit of a syrupy feel to it in the mouth. Very average maibock overall here.

500 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 6.5%. Clear golden colour, moderate white head. Slightly sweetish but pleasant aroma of light malts and floral and herbal hops, hints of honey and newmown grass. The flavour is slightly sweet, but not too much, distinctly malty, but also with distinct floral and herbal hops, and a bitter finish.

Golden in color with a slight orange-ish haze on presentation from the bottle and into my Becher. Good lacing although thin and fading throughout. Sweet and bready in the nose, no doubt. The flavor was right behind the aroma with a light, slightly sweet, breadiness. Good balance with a slight hop twinge in typicak German bock fashion. Very nice and surprisingly quaffable. I never would have guessed this came out of Bamberg. Well done.

Presentation: 500ml (1 Pint 0.9 fluid ounce) standard looking tall thin bodied brown glass bottle sealed with a white crown cap which has a colorful log. Listed as “Bamberger Original” a strong hint to both its proud regional identity and heritage. The main and neck labels both retain the same design, they have a picture of a Goat head in gold with “Mahr’s Bräu” above and “Bock-Bier” below both in a Germanic red text... Bottled on “12 05” and listed at Alc. 6.0% Vol. My bottle looks just like the one in the BA Database.

Appearance: The immediate reaction is that this is not dark, but a rather stunning turbid honey-golden body that sits at peace underneath a quickly fizzing and faster fading off-white head which collapses rapidly to nothing more than a priestly halo ring. Zero carbonation with a lifeless look.

Nose: Honey looks transpond directly into the aromas. Sweet honey malts with a menthol aspect as it warms. Nice enough but nothing special.

Taste: Tingling sweet malt finish from the previous mouthful seems to entrance the next one. Breaded malts with a baked sweetness. Finishes with a dryness which leaves a lively sweet bitterness which exhibits a herbal quality, this lasts long after the swallow and well into the next mouthful. An iterative brew that never seems to go anywhere yet is hard to break away from.

Mouthfeel: Light feel to start with but the ending is dragged down by the herbal sweetness. Not exactly cloying but it has a lingering stickiness that is annoying.

Drinkability: A tad stodgy and the tingling finish becomes too much. The half litre bottle was enough; I could have done with just 33ml quite easily. A loner of sorts and not one that I would want to quaff.

Overall: The Fourth of Six Mahr’s Brau beers that each cost me $3.99 at Hollingshead Deli in Orange, CA. This one had too many faults to impress, and resulted in a brew that felt very average overall. Perhaps a fresher sample may have helped but even so I found this one just had too many holes in it and was wanting in too many areas.

Praline and macadamia nut aromas arise from a hazy wheat colored liquid. Rich, fruity mouthful. Inward, polished bitterness gives the impression of marble and stones rather than herb or wood. Atop this there is a syrup-textured cascade of bartlett pear and raw almond flavor. Slick and rich, but fixed neatly by solid structure and girdled with light, fine fizz. No acidity. I appreciate the purity of pale malt in this beer. No fresh hops obscures that bocky bockyness of the malt.

Is there anything else this pale and *purely,* exhuberantly malty? Anywhere?

Edit, 10/12/05: I've been drinking this beer for a solid two weeks now. Outrageously unique. But my question is: how would this go with spicy, authentic roux-based gumbo? I think it would go pretty well with it. In fact, I think it would be deliriously good with any southern barbecue plate.

Sampled on tap at the brewery.

This bock bier poured a clear, amber color with white foam that settled. The smell was malty with some vegetable aroma. The taste was good and malty with a hint of vegetable. Not sweet. The mouthfeel was smooth and dry with medium body. It was slightly sweet up front but dry overall and hoppy in the finish. This was a very nice bock bier.

Pours to a brilliant clear golden color with a white head. The aroma is malty and a bit grainy. It has a touch of chocolate in the aroma as well. The flavor has a malty, hop spiciness throughout to the drying bitter finish. It has a sort of warmingness to it as well. It is a good bock beer; very enjoyable.

"Wait...aren't bocks supposed to be dark beers?" Throw that fallacy out the window, and peek at a clear, honey-golden hued beaut, with a smallish, fastly fading, lacey head...Aroma: light, yet sweet, far, I wouldn't have guessed that this was a bock we're dealing with, but perhaps only time will tell...
Taste: light, sweetish, nothing from hops, and malt is only middling, body is very light, finish, on the forgettable side, though the sweetness is coming through...ah, I get it,now, it's a mai-bock, why didn't I realize that sooner? Crown me for the king of fools, for I was judging this against the wrong criteria, but there's half the bottle left with which to contemplate, buttery, tasty, sweet, and full of character, a terrific maibock, never going overboard in the sweetness department, yet still delciciousness personified, yum, not such a bad thing out of Bamberg, is it, now?

Pure waves of gold in the glass, a little hazed from never being filtered, and sometimes carries a little bit of head.

Aroma is potent, highly so, and just as complex. Billowing scents of vanilla, honey, super-soft but barely nutty fresh white bread, tinges of pear and lemon, and the purest pure purity of decocted German malts.

Every quaff is buxom bockiness of pure pale malt expression balanced by just enough noble hops sting. Sweetish full base with light crusty, nutty edges that are actually finely tuned rather than negated by the Riesling-like lemon pinch and acidity in the finish. Like any truly world-class beer the mouthfeel and the flavor spiral together, showing both fullness, softness, and calm ease of drinkability. How do you do it all at once?

I don't know how else to describe it, I'll just point to other pale beers that similarly paint the holy in a glass with a simple trinity of pale malts, light hops, and incredible yeast - La Choulette Blond, Duvel, Weihenstephan Weisse, Saison DuPont. A beer I've worshipped before many times but held back from assigning petty numbers and weak descriptors. Who readily dissects such joyful experience? I'd rather have another, start it cold and watch it turn over and over, widen, deepen, and capture as it warms to room temperature. Helles Bock indeed.

I've seen this a few times here in the Twin Cities and have always held off picking it up but there was no hesitation as I was limited to time, selection, and money - yet only one review, and from Jimbo who sampled it at the brewery, what gives?
Anyways the bottle is a brown 1pt 9oz'er with a old time classy looking label with a weird goat head on it which states 6% ABV on the back, which may be different from the tap?

Pours out a honey yellow to settle a light pale chill hazed golden yellow; tall puffy white head that has a larger bubbly structure within that sits awhile before floating away to a very thin haze and thin collar and lace sticks in minimal strings. Aroma ain't much, but whats there is quite pleasant of a soft pretzeled bread thats slightly sweet and malty. Taste has more of the same with a good length of mild sweetish tones mixed with a dry breadiness thats a bit like a pretzel with just a touch of sea salt in there. Finish fades into some more dryness with some lighter biting hops and a small herbal quality. Feel is quite smooth with a soild medium body and bits of dryness all throughout with a very nice mild creamyness. This stuff is quite nice, a nice surprise compared to the Christmas Bock Mahr's makes. An overall, very drinkable nice little Maibock. Session material all the way.

Appearance: cloudy yellowish orange in color. 1 finger head falls quickly to a surface spot. Chunks of yeast float in the glass too.

Smell: grass, yeast, malt sweetness and pears make a mildly pleasant aroma.

Taste: grainy malt sweetness, mild bitterness, pears, honey, mild yeast flavors, and a touch of alcohol are decently balanced. The yeast was a touch too much though for the style.

Mouthfeel: smooth throughout. Medium-heavy bodied beer. Brief sweet aftertaste.

Drinkability: the fruity sweetness grew a bit boring after a while. Not a maibock that will want you to buy a bunch of these.

Traded a BA buddy of mine for this bottle when I stopped in for a visit on holiday. Thanks for the opportunity! Pours a two finger off-white fluffy head over a very cloudy dull lemon colored liquid. Smells rich sweet malt,c aramel and some bock. Some hops...rough and they come across to me a tettnanger. A dab of honey aroma as I drink the beer. Tatses dry with a hint of funk. That's munich malts speaking to me. A little bit of dirty tettnanger hops ties into the malt. What I find disturbing is an intrusive clove flavor that doesn't belong. I wonder if this one is starting to skunk. I once had a bottle of Hofbrau that was like was a shadow of the fresh stuff I drank in Munich. Light in the mouth, but ahs a thick sugary feel. Too bad about the clove, this beer was going to rate quite well.

Initial head. A nice bitterness, easy drinking. Drying and bit sour aftertaste. Clove spice detracted. Complex malting and malty and bit of toast and nuts aroma. A rare one picked up at Cloverleaf. present carbonation. Best accompanied by food.Six months' old.

1 pint .9 oz bottle. Mahr's Bock Beer pours out a slightly hazy, dark yellow color. It's quite pale for a bock. The aroma is herb tea and caramel. Big malty flavor. Tastes like bread and caramel. A lemony, tangy, herbal flavor comes in at the finish. The mouthfeel is medium. Great drinkability. Most beers this malty aren't so easy to drink. Yet another quality offering from Mahr's.

This brewery is quickly becoming one of my favorites, and really getting me into German beers in general. Much individual style to all their beers, each unique in it's own way, but all uniquely similar within the brewery.
Pours a light orangy color, hazed, with a nice white head to it. Smells of raw sweet malts, honey, and a peppery spice. Much the same in the taste. Malty up front, sweet and doughy, with a little bit of a grain or oat taste in there, and a milk and honey character, almost mead-like, topped off with a nice spicy hop profile. I love the way these Mahr's beers all come together so nicely and subtly with a really nice medium bodied and smooth mouthfeel. Always so drinkable. Another great one in a line of incredible beers from Mahr's.

Cloudy, honey-gold beauty. A short sudsy head rises and falls, leaving a fair amount of lace.

Dark orange, yeasty notes to the nose at first sniff. Still rather closed up. Toffee and, oddly, coffee grounds. Later a bit of chocolate and cherry aroma. As it warms, the chocolate and yeast notes dominate.

First sip brings bitter herbal hops, lots of froth, malt and fruit races in underneath, the bitterness returns. At once snappy, tangy, and a full and meaty brew. Real nice and not expected. Not so much syrupy as full-bodied and densely carbonated. Great mouthfeel. Somehow creamy and full and simultaneously bright and refreshing. The bitterness is controlled but relentless and leads to a long aftertaste of herbs and bitter orange peel.

Not just for sipping. Complex, balanced and bracing.

Mahr's Bock has a light haziness and is golden in color. Head is good-sized and creamy. The aroma has a light malt sweetness with a touch of honey-like smell. Aroma is very helles-like, but stronger. The taste has a great sweet malt flavor. Very flavorful and layered. A sharp sweetness is provided by a honey flavor. Hops provide balance and some bite. This is very drinkable and represents the quality I expect from Mahrs Brau.
