a collaboration with bull and bush, this syrah wine barrel aged dopplebock represents some of both brewers' best work. bull and bush seems to have a line on syrah barrels, lots of releases lately aged in these. pretty cool. this is a neat base beer for a wine barrel, doesnt necessarily seem like a lager on the surface, but the malt base is big and german and earthy and awesome, not as sweet as a lot of them, and with a cool toasted malt property. the syrah though really overtakes this, more than complimenting it (the aromas and flavors are very congruent), but taking the lead really. wet oak is heavy, either freshly drained or lots of time, and the wine itself is very prominent here too. i get a ton of dried red fruits, tannins, and booze. its all united really well by the wood, seemingly mellow, oddly enough, for how intensely flavored it is, seems already aged and mature, strong and autumnal, worthy of any holiday table. dopplebock and red wine are two distinct and robust flavors i would have never thought to put together, but this works incredibly well and is a real work of art. one of the more intriguing beers ive had in awhile, perfectly smooth body, with some crispness remaining, and a very layered flavor profile. brilliant beer.
