I take it this this is 2021.1 Chinook Barley Eine from an ex muscatelex smoked wheat-wine barrel
Bottle conditioned and poured to reveal a rich barley sugar light brown body with good white head
Aroma is sweet sherry with a hint of cherrywood smoke
Flavour is flavour is that aroma

L- A thumper of a 750ml bottle with a highly decorative illustrated lable of... a pug bedecked in very fancy looking Tudor-era [?] battle-dress and armour. Pours clear, dark golden with a 1Cm off-white foam head.
S- I get a wine note from this. [I might have congestion so can discern no more].
T- The wine note carries into the taste. Mercifully the beer has the body to carry it off. It's hinting at dry in the finish, the gentle wine-note adding to this. It's certainly not as rich as a more typical barley-wine; that's a +ve for my tastes. There is some oak in there too.
F- Clearly pungent (ABV% wise) but the winey/dry aspect means it doesn't come over as too heavy. CO2 in the mouth is good. The wine note is not dominating, it's clearly there but secondary = another +ve,
O- I hadn't realised this was wine-barrel aged, only noticing that when I popped the cap. [I usually aim to blind taste beers and only do 'the reveal' after drafting my rating]. My heart sank when I saw mention of wine barrels, so often that goes wrong, or.... it doesn't work for me. A jumble of wine+beer clashes for me. 'Never mix the grape and the grain' as the wise old saying goes'. This however is done with some delicacy, subtlety, sophistication. I like it [shock!]. It is different, well brewed, zero to dislike and it's understated in it's individuality. Which during an era of at times show-off shouty impact beers is a very welcome thing. Well done Torrside, this is probably the most enjoyable wine-barrel aged beer I've tried, proving again that less, or subtlety, = much more.
Bought from Trembling Madness in York. 750ml bottle.
ps. Post rating notes from the bottle. The back lable reads 'Battle Pug 2021.1. 'Chinook barley wine from an ex-Moscatel, ex-smoked-wheat-wine barrel' [!?] 9.0%. Contains barley and wheat. BB: 01/01/2028
