We brewed this beer similarly to a Foreign Extra Stout, but included a substantial amount of flaked oats alongside base malts of German Vienna and Munich to provide a smooth, fuller body. Various crystal malts and roasted malts from England provide flavors of baker's chocolate and dark fruit without notes of bitter coffee.

This version of Soma Stout spent 5 months in Cabernet wine barrels and 19 months in unique French oak whiskey barrels that first held French Shiraz. Over two years in barrels has softened this nuanced yet full-flavored wild stout. Notes of dried dark fruit, burnt caramel, and chocolate are intertwined with French oak tannins, fortified red wine, and Bourbon. The finish is smooth and medium bodied with restrained acidity.

375 mL bottle. Black. Not much head. Smells of strong Cabernet wine, chocolate roasted malt, and a hint of whiskey that still retains Odd Breed's signature French oak character. Tastes of red wine and accompanying sourness with dark fruit. Cocoa power around the edges. Sourness peaks before it becomes too intense. There's even a bit of sweetness there. Dry and oaky in the finish where the whiskey finally makes its appearance. Medium heavy. Heavy on the wine, but very nice.

A vinous and wild foreign export stout? Sure why the hell not! Charcoal black pour complete with a tan cap. Get plenty of wine and whiskey barrel up front in the nose, giving off aromas of honey soaked date, red grape, leather, smoke, a pinch of brown sugar, and plenty of oak. Taste is strikingly different, apple cider vinegar, char, wine, whiskey, the honey dipped date, and black currant combine to be a sharp, boozy and vinous start before receding with a tide of smoke, more char, roasted malt, earth, burnt caramel, and oak chips. It is indeed odd, but I don't hate it. Feel is vinous, boozy, yet smoky and light. Characteristically pungent but not necessarily in a bad way. On the fence, but I think I would have again when in an experimental mood, it is fascinating, but if looking for a pure wine BA stout there are others out there
