Had it on tap at Bir&Fud Rome, Italy. I had been reading about Italy's emerging craft beer scene, particularly, their growing appreciation for hoppy brews. It is with great anticipation that I chose Led's Hop by Italian brewery No Tomorrow.
It poured a large foam head with a mushroom cap that almost filled over. The color was semi clear and with a slightly hazy golden straw color. The head showed good retention.
As I waited for the massive head to recede, I hold the pint glass up to my nose and smell fresh citrus, primarily orange and grapefruit.
The head has now become a bed of film with splashes of lace. I hold the glass up to my lips and am impressed by its smoothness and most gentle touch of carbonation. The body is medium but right away I can tell it drinks light on its toes. The palate starts out dry, crisp and with a gentle peppery hoppy finish. A soft, thin and sweet pale malt backbone begins to develop, along with understated juicy citrusy flavors of orange and grapefruit pulp.
The depth of flavors and aromas continue to develop, as a touch of crystal malt emerges. The pine and the bitterness from the hops increases its volume slightly. I hold the glass up to my nose again and mangos and berries emerge, as well as biscuit malt and herbal hops. The freshly squeezed citric juices also continue to develop in the palate.
As I finish the drink, the lacing is smattered all over the pint glass like suds left over from a bubble bath.
I'm very impressed by this Italian version of an American IPA. Very flavorful and amazingly smooth mouthfeel. Looking forward to trying other Italian IPAs.
