Say "Soul Doubt" out loud. Get it? Turns out this is an oatmeal stout per the bartender. On to the beer:
Black in color with a small ring of lace settled around the glass. A few dots of lace splash onto the glass. Its aroma is like a brownie, but muted; blame the cold serving temperature for that.
The taste....starts off a little sweet, like oat sweet. Good quantities of dry brownie mix, a sprinkle of bittering and green hops, and an echo of phenol among the other flavors. Pretty smooth in the mouth and closer to full bodied than medium.
Most of the Newport Beach Brew Co beers are presentable, and Soul Doubt is fitting in that. Made much more workable by the cooler weather that's going on.

Sampled 7/1/2011 at the brewpub.
Pours dark brown, mostly black, clear, beige head, some lacing but not much retention.
Aroma is ash, coffe, and chocolate malt. Intense.
Flavor is lots more ash and coffee along with a chocolate backbone followed by a hint of malt and toffee. But mostly lots of burnt and roasted flavors.
Body is medium, not a ton of drinkability.
Beer add number 400.
