Double Nickel Brewing Co. "Cascara IPA"
12 FL OZ brown glass bottle, seemingly without freshness dating
$2.49 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: Wow, I've never even heard of Cascara hops... and that's probably because they're not hops! Cascara are the dried skin of the coffee cherry, the fruit that surrounds the coffee bean. They don't taste anything like coffee but are instead fruity. It's very popular as a tea right now, but still fairly hard to find, and expensive. I'm curious so let's get to it! It's poured a hazy deep amber body beneath a short head of creamy off-white. Had I been a little more careful it would have been clearer as I wasn't paying attention and let some of the lees through. If you buy it be sure to let it sit until it settles, and then pour it carefully as there's a lot of sediment in there. Moving forward... the aroma isn't that strong, but it's fairly unusual. In fact I've never smelled anything like it. It's lightly fruity and mildly floral with perhaps a delicate note of sweet tobacco. Let's taste it... well it's certainly a beer, a caramelish IPA, so don't expect anything weird. It's malty and sweetish upfront, gently fruity and floral across the middle, and then bitter and dry in the finish. Some cherry-like fruitiness lingers as well, along with a kind of woodiness and some floral character. It's hard to describe the flavor of the Cascara but I like it. Back to the beer itself, the head has held up, maintaining a thin but solid and creamy cap, and the lacing is an almost solid sheet. It's medium bodied with a dextrinous feel, and its moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation lends a gentle caress to the tongue before warming to become creamy smooth. Overall I'm quite intrigued by the Cascara, and the beer as a whole is quite charming and enjoyable.
