Today's CANBIF selection is a dark, rich espresso stout. Heavy on the coffee in both smell and taste - this could be a fine breakfast beer, indeed. I found the mouthfeel a bit thin, but overall this hit the mark for the style.

Opaque dark brown color with no visible activity. Weak light brown 1 finger head, lasting around 2 minutes, with mediocre legs. Flavors of coffee, dark roasted grains, dark chocolate, walnuts, toffee, herbal spices. Weak on the sweetness, sharp and bitter herbal hops with burnt malts. Slightly creamy and milky medium to almost full body with very soft crispy carbonation. Medium strength finish, lingering quality coffee tongue coat, a bit nutty with a hint of nutmeg, light leathery and earthy malty feel. Fresh coffee smell but quite faint, while the mouth feel is highly rich. Nicely balanced and well intensified, nothing excessive here. Pleasant and tasty flavors. Very dense body but still refreshing while boldly spiced. Overall very good quality craft.

A- Pours a very dark, slightly ruby topped by a beautiful 2 finger tan head with good retention. Lots of lacing.

S- Dark roast coffee, hints of milk chocolate, cream.

T- Very deep and intense coffee flavour that offers the astringency of a proper cup of coffee. Despite this intense coffee flavour, along with the high cacao dark chocolate, a distinct creaminess also shines through. Delicious stuff!

M- Medium-Heavy Body and low carbonation: The way every proper Stout should be. Extremely easy drinking with a velvety smooth mouthfeel.

O- I think this beer has single-handedly made me like Coffee-infused stouts. Before having this beer, every coffee Stout I had seemed either dull or just plain fake. To make the point brutally clear, if I heated this beer up (no way in hell I would actually do it), I could imagine it tasting like a great cup of espresso. In other words, this beer is awesome. Do yourself a favour and try it.
