Presentation: 12 fluid ounce bottle borrowed on permanent loan from my friend and fellow So. Cal. BA, xlperro. It has a rather simple looking yellow label that has a picture of two dolphins rising out of the sea and jumping over a cut gemstone of some kind. Labeled simply as Skinner, Gem of the Sea Pilsner. No freshness date, but it is listed as 5.1% ABV.
Appearance: Dark golden color with some amber hints. Large white head which soon breaks up to leave just a frothy ring halo and a thin surface covering. Some lacing on the glass. Solid dissolved carbonation levels.
Nose: A mix of grain from the pilsner malts and some floral aspects, no doubt attributable to the hops.
Taste: Light hops, give a bitter beginning. Fresh baked bread middle with a sweet malt ending give the beer a hint of Pilsner character. Has an astringent bitter finish once the sweet malt in the end of the beer fades. Average strength flavors.
Mouthfeel: Average in strength but light in character with an astringent mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Easily dispatched without too much effort, and Im suffering the effects of the BA So.Cal. Social held in Costa Mesa yesterday. Its slightly above average.
Overall: A run of the mill, middle of the road, average Pilsner. Nothing special but an easy going beer that is a good thirst quencher to have in the fridge for those hot days.
