Bottle from Brewers Haven Nothing out of the ordinary here. Inky black pour, small ring of beige head. Roast grain aroma, minor hints of chocolate, kind of sweet. Taste follows with he toasty grains forward, but not adding to much to the overall. Light for a RIS.

Perfectly opaque black head, small tan head.

This was one is tricky; it’s lightly carbonated with roasted malts coating tumultuous hops. It’s not easy to distinguish individual flavors of hops and malts; rather it’s roasted then sweet malt flavors followed by piney hops. Body is not terribly thick, which isn’t bad.

It’s good.

22 oz. bottle:

Pours black with a tan head with good retention for the style. Vanishing trailing lace sticks.

The smell is of chocolate, molasses, coffee, dark fruit, earthy notes.

The taste is of chocolate, molasses, coffee. Bitterness from roast and noticeable earthy hops make this a dryer, more bitter, interpretation of the style. It holds through the finish, though the finish could be longer. Alcohol is very well-covered, helping the smoothness/drinkability, though the high acidiity puts a dent in the smoothness/drinkability.

Not the richest or fullest, it still reaches full-bodied.

A slight bitter blandness, though adding balance, I feel detracts a bi from its potential malty richness. In the end, I'm between scores for the "overall", but I'll give it the higher of the two scores. It's a solid, though certainly not spectacular, interpretation of the style (with a slight unique touch). A nice "sipper".

Undated 22oz bottle served in a stout glass. Deep, opaque black in color, which yields just a glimmer of ruby at the bottom edge of the glass. Not much in the way of aroma, unfortunately. Flavor is malty, roasty, and boozy. A little bit of a hop twang. I feel the bitterness and sweetness reach excellent balance in this beer -- the alcohol less so. I love RIS but this one is just ok.

Look: near pitch black, with a heavy tracing head
Smell: heavy roasted, coffee, & light spicy hop aroma
Taste:incredibly balanced with the bitterness of hops & chocolate/coffee malt, mixed with the sweetness hevay malt brings.
Feel: deep and syurpy, with a thick tannic acidity.

a bit hoppier (and less rich) than a typical Russian Imperial Stout. If you favor a bit less malt in a relatively high abv stout, this might be your drink. It was also budget priced (Astoria Oregon Costco). When poured the head is sufficient, though much less robust than Abyss or other local high abv stouts. The head dissipates quickly. Fairly thin on the palate and with limited sweetness. If I wasn't drinking this as a RIS I would probably consider it an interesting well-balance, higher abv ale. But as a RIS it doesn't measure up to many others which provide the expected level of richness.
