Brewed in conjunction with local homebrewer Keith Rodenhouser, the 9th installment of Kentucky Ale's Great American Beer Festival, Pro-Am Brewoff winner, the warm days of summer might be coming to a close but the taste for summer ale sure is not.
Keith's 'Last Sip of Summer' ale pour light, pale and straw- harking to the light bodied British-style bitters. Equipped with the faintest hoppy gaze, the ale sheds a creamy and cottony lather to cap the beer firmly to ensure an enticing bouquet of citrus, herb, pine, caramel and honey. Though leading with the light fruity sweetness of marmalade, the ale quickly turns to those more summery attributes.
The middle palate blooms with all things citrus- pink grapefruit, vibrant orange, a slender tang of lemon and a bright, fresh and grassy hop taste. With the support of caramel malt that lurks in the background, its sweetness works to inform the hops with a juicy, ripe and plump fruit culmination. While trending dry, crisp and clean; the finish is pleasantly grassy and citrusy but with only the most tepid of hoppy pine bitterness to balance the fleeting malt only.
An absolute star to beat the summer's heat, the medium-light bodied ale continues to dry, intent to focus on hops even in its final impressions. Light bitterness of hops and a retreat of caramel strike an even-keel balance shortly into aftertaste where the ale lingers with a hint of buttery marmalade.
