2015:
Woodinville Whiskey barrel – 4.44
Draft sample at SOB Fest 2015 in Springfield.
First public offering from Hand Of Fate to my knowledge.
Jet black with brownish mocha edges, thin layer of tan foam, spotty lacing. Good coverage considering the high ABV, dwindles to a wispy surface skim after first couple sips.
Intense coffee, vanilla, and bourbon aromas, well blended and rich.
Brownie sweetness, tempered by coffee and vanilla, warming bourbon noticeable in the aftertaste, nicely smoothed edges, not harsh. Probably the best asset of this beer is how well-melded and cohesive it is. It has an intense burst of flavors that smooth out nicely on the palate, and the aftertaste has some lingering woody notes of toasted oak that lend complexity. Body is fairly light with mellow carbonation, could use a touch more heft to match the big taste and aroma.
Overall a highly impressive first offering from this new brewery. It blew me away to be honest, and made the best possible first impression. Really looking forward to seeing what they do in the future.
2016:
Heaven Hill barrel – 3.9
More mellow in feel with a heightened bourbon presence. Coffee and vanilla flavors are still intense, some malty roast and minor oxidation, the barrel takes over more with this batch. Could use a little more body, but the flavors are nice. The brewer told me the barrels are Heaven Hill for this batch, and much bigger than the Woodinville barrels used last year, which were firkin-sized (8 gal).
2019:
Buffalo Trace barrel, batch 196 - 4.4
This is great stuff, and a return to the greatness of the first batch. Big coffee intensity, with bourbon, dark chocolate, and vanilla in supporting roles. Creamy and smooth, no oxidation, medium bodied. Picked up a few bottles to stash away.
