The color of the liquid has an interesting purple hue to the cloudy brown color. Small head that is basically rim bubbles and half-film on the surface. The spots that form after each sips slowly slide back into the rim bubbles leaving behind no permanent lacing.
Initially, I smell raisin and (oddly) rubber. Lots of booze to the nose. Not very sweet especially for the style. It reminds me of paint thinner.
The start is raisiny and semisweet. I can retain these flavors by holding the liquid in my mouth. The swallow is surprisingly neutral but the aftertaste is boozy with a cleaning-solution feel. It quickly fades but does linger (faintly) for a long time. A most unusual barley wine devoid of the rich body or never-ending sugars. Worth seeking out for unusualness, but it would be hard to put down more than a single glass.
