A: Pours an opaque and slightly murky deep reddish cola brown approaching black in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising slowly along the edges of the glass and moderate chestnut brown + mahogany + garnet red + ruby red + amber colored highlights. The beer has a finger tall sudsy foamy tan head that quickly reduces to a small to medium sized patch of very thin film covering approximately 20% of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Moderate to strong aromas of dark + toasted + toffee + caramel malts with slightly stronger than moderate amounts of caramel + toffee + brown sugar + dark candi sugar + dark fruit (raisin) sweetness. Moderate aromas of caramel + vanilla + toasted oak + bourbon booziness.
T: Upfront there are moderate to strong flavors of dark + toasted + toffee + caramel malts with slightly stronger than moderate amounts of caramel + toffee + brown sugar + dark candi sugar + dark fruit (raisin) sweetness. That is followed by moderate flavors of caramel + vanilla + toasted oak + bourbon booziness. There is no discernible hop presence and there is a moderate lingering sweet raisin booziness.
M: Just shy of full bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth with light amounts of alcohol warming in the finish
O: Definitely a slow sipper because this is a big boozy sweet barleywine but it is excellent.
