"Holy smoke" smoked Porter. 6.20% ABV.
On-draught at the brewery in May 2016. 1/2 pint (28cl by their definition) for 2.50 euro.
Smoke is present, but comes accompanied by some harshness in addition to the usual gamey pork/meat flavour. It's mild compared to that observed in, say, Schlenkerla's rauchbier(e) - maybe a 4/10 in terms of intensity.
Dark malts give this its predictable porter backbone. Maybe there's some chocolate malt in there too.
All in all, it's painfully simple for a smoked Porter. Shallow but balanced. The one-two punch of smoke and dark malts is effective, and this has a serviceable smooth wet mouthfeel coupled with a necessary medium body, but it leaves loads to be desired.
Some roasted barley would be a nice start. I'd like to see the smoke ramped up, some beechwood or chestnutwood or applewood flavour worked in naturally, and maybe even some Java roast or vanilla.
Compared to benchmark paragons of this smoked subtype of porter such as Alaska's far superior expression, this is severely wanting in terms of intricacy and depth of flavour.
Drinkable and enjoyable, but forgettably basic.
