Cervezas Artesana Arriaca/Boris Brew “Vikingathor”
33cl brown glass bottle coded “Consumo Preferente 01-2025 Lote L.3250523” and sampled on 29/11/2023
€2.99 @ El Corte Inglés, Sevilla, ES
Look: A clear dark copper / chestnut brown colored body is capped by two thin finger widths of khaki/light tan foam. The head retention and lacing are both very good to excellent.
Smell: Surprisingly hoppy with citrusy, piney, and floral notes over a grainy and lightly toasty malt base.
Taste: As the aroma suggests, this time not surprisingly. I was certainly not expecting fresh and fairly bold citrusy, piney, floral, and otherwise tropical-fruity hops from this beer but here they are! Toasty and gently sweetish malt with both medium and dark caramel notes and some additional apricot, lemon/lime, mango, and dark & dried fruitiness to round it out. A solid bitterness dries it (the label lists 75 IBUs but it doesn’t really feel like it) and it finishes dry with plenty of residual citrus that includes lemon, grapefruit, and tangerine.

CAN
Chestnut with cream tan carpet. 3.75
Nuts, a bit of earth, but rubber + bubble gum, too. 3.5
Cocoa, almonds, a big whack of clovey phenols, some polish remover of Na-il, and a bit of dried orange rind. 3.25
Almost medium, bit of chew, low fizz. 3.75
A bit pale for a brown (tagged "Indian Dunkel" so I'm figuring this is an American Brown), and the nose isn’t raising hopes. And so it goes: flawed in enough different ways to hide whatever the “Indian” part of this is supposed to be. Settles into some Quad-like raisin and cocoa with lots of heat, but never gets good. This was reputed to be the best of the haul, and storage issues seems so endemic in Spain, I’m curious to research how much of what’s wrong here could be post-can. Nevertheless, borderline undrinkable. 3.25

21 Nov 2015: Bottle From Gastrobar Al-Andalus. In La Corne horn. Watching Sucker Punch. Really nice aroma and good hoppy taste (although a bit below the aroma) Alcohol isnt noticeable.
25 Apr 2016: Bottle from Al Andalus. In Teku glass. At dinner, with fried chicken (mercadona, microwave version) + apple with yogourth. 7 months after bottling and the hops still feel very tasty and aromatic. I think Ive liked even more than the first one, which was fresher
25 Apr 2016: Can from El Corte Ingles. In Teku glass. Playing South Park Stick Of Truth. Nearly same as bottled version. Maybe a bit softer in mouth and better in eye, but I also found the bottled version softer when fresher and this can is fresher than the bottled version. Avg 4.12
15 May 2017. Version brewed at San Frutos. In Teku glass. Watching Rogue One. More balanced but much below the arriaca version. Just slight trace of hops and some roastyness. 3 months before bb date. To repeat fresh
