Original ratings: 4.0 3.5 3.75 3.5 3.5 (overall rating coming to 3.63)
The look is much the same. The aroma comes across deeper and richer in scent; cocoa; dates and plums. The taste also loses some of its intense alcohol presence and is more rounded and approachable with dark grain flavors. The mouthfeel also improves with the loss of alcohol heat; richer and denser on the palate.
This beer has aged well. Unfortunately, like most beers offered by Local Relic, they are only produced once and in small quantities, so being able to pick up more bottles for aging isn't an option. Still, a fine revisit to this beer...
-------------------------------------------------------------
The beer appears a dark, turbid brown; thick, creamy and rocky head. Slight amount of aroma; mostly dark grains; some spiciness. Dark grained flavors; rye notes; boozy. Heavy body; rather soft mouthfeel due to the carbonation; malt sweetness for feel yet with a rather hot alcohol quality as well.
This beer is okay. It's a rather mixed bag as far as sensory appeal, and in some ways has too much of an alcohol presence, yet comes across fair enough for a dark, high ABV beer with a spicy quality.
