Very little head production and no retention. Very attractive ebony body.
Potent and wonderful aroma, dark and boozy. Notes of rye whiskey, toast, oak, leather, red grape, char, raisin, caramel, pepper, chocolate, molasses, cherry, date, licorice. It smells quite a bit like a Russian Imperial Stout, but that could be part of the booziness and spiciness of the rye coming through.
Mouthfeel is flat and lifeless, which is a major let down, as the potent flavor really lacks impact. Flavors match the nose, along with a liqueur-like booziness from the rye whiskey.
Never having had a beer from Local Relic before, I can't say for sure this isn't their style, but I have to think something went wrong in the aging process. It's not infected; it's just flat, and consequently, while it tastes really darn good, the overall experience isn't great.

Pure black body, opaque; no noticeable carbonation and no head, flat appearance. Rich, boozy smell; raisins and figs; muted spiciness. Rich and boozy flavor; baker's chocolate; rye whiskey; anise and licorice. Heavy body; flat and watery (as in no carbonation); some chewy residual sugar notes; alcohol heat.
Local Relic has always produced very limited releases (and as far as I know, still aim to never make the same beer twice). Big beers, dark and heavy have always been one of their fortes. Taste-wise, this one lives up to that aspect, but looks and mouthfeel are pretty bland. Still, if I could get my mitts on another bottle or two, I surely would. I love its tasty, boozy qualities.
Pouring temperature: 50 °F; bottling data: 67 bottles produced (no date), Batch Number 679
