At the heart of our Footscray brewery is definitely this Pale Ale. Pouring a golden straw colour with a lacing head. Floral and citrus hop aromas make of an inviting and crisp take on this infamous style.

Thus far Hop Nation have coloured me “impressed” with their NEIPA offerings: Jedi Juice NEIPA (up there with my favourite NEIPAs) and The Dawn Double NEIPA (which was also swell). Now it’s time to take a look at one of their lighter (at 4.6% ABV) core range beers with this The Heart Pale Ale. Admittedly I’m a bit of a die-hard American IPA fan (hence my name on BeerAdvocate being “doktorhops”), I can however from time to time appreciate the lighter sibling of an IPA, although at 4.6% I’m curious as to how Hop Nation will excite me… I’m guessing, without even opening the can, Galaxy, Citra and Mosaic hops is how. I could be wrong, cannot find a hop bill on the can or Google, so it’ll be a mystery then [but we all know these hops are the best!].
Poured from a 375ml can into a nonic pint.
A: Clear pale straw body with a white sea foam head that fizzes back leaving a thin amount of lace inside the glass and damn-near no head – Colour: Great! Head: Shite, is the take-home here. 6/10.
S: Tropical slant from the off with notes of: Passion fruit, paw paw, and a grassy/green hop character towards the end. Biscuit/dry cracker malt base provides back up. Hop character is very fresh, no wonder – brewed 12/10/18, that’s pretty fresh, good stuff. Sweetness lingers on in the aroma. Kinda reminds me of a mini-jedi, this is some sort of Yoda-beer then. 8/10.
T: Bit too on the lighter side, though we did expect it from the 4.6% ABV. Flavour profile begins with dry cracker/biscuit malt, slight-grainy mid, whispers of those tropical hops leading into the finish and a grassy/green mildly bitter note at the end. A tad too weak to have a discernible tussle between sweet/bitter – it’s like two cowardly French Dukes battling it out with duelling muskets: it doesn’t really get a chance to hit the mark. 6/10.
M: Mid to light, borderline watery, with a thin but excitable carbonation – plentiful burps lay ‘ere. 6/10.
D: Not the best/worst APA, just a run-o-mill brew from Hop Nation. Hey, they were bound to have some boring ones knocking about – can’t all be winners can they? I suspect because they’ve got so many heavy-hitters that they just wanted to have an easy-drinking BBQ beer kicking around for shits and giggles. Only problem is calling this beer “The Heart” of Hop Nation, because the real heart is a banger of a brew like Jedi Juice, this is more of a “Pinky Toe” of a beer. 7/10.
Food match: BBQ fits the bill: hamburgers, snags, you decide.
