We took our classic mixed field Saison and hop it up like a west coast IPA. Fruity and juicy hop aromas leap from the glass and the beer finishes crisp and dry. Brewed with Pilsner malt, raw wheat, rye, oats, spelt, Columbus, Centennial, Comet and Citra hops. Don’t age this one, drink it as fresh as possible!

This beer is dedicated to David Bowie, a creative spirit right up until the end, so long Ziggy…

Appearance: Pours a cloudy honey color capped by a prodigious head; impressive stickage and some nice lacing action, to boot

Smell: Spicy and herbal, with notes of cracker, citrus pith and yeast phenols

Taste: Cracker malt, in the backbone, with the combination of the Belgian saison yeast strains and the hop bill merging together, bringing white pepper, herbal tones and citrus pith together through the middle and into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: An interesting hybrid, bringing a nice hop presence to the underlying interesting character of the saison style

A: Pours a cloudy deep golden apricot in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly along the edges of the glass and moderate amber highlights. The beer has a three finger tall sudsy foamy white head that slowly reduces to a large patch of medium thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of citrus/grapefruit and citrus/orange zest hops with a light aromas of herbal hops, pale malts, and spicy saison yeast.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of cracker, wheat, and pale malts with a moderate flavor of spicy saison yeast. That is followed by moderate to strong flavors of citrus/grapefruit, citrus/orange zest, and herbal hops which impart a moderate amount of lingering aggressive bitterness.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp initially with moderate amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: Very enjoyable, these hybrid style beers are not always successful but this is a very nice example which captures nice aspects of saison/farmhouse and west coast IPA. Very nice hop flavors and aromas with the more traditional saison/farmhouse malts and yeast. Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol.

Clouded greenish orange color with a large, frothy head that retains nicely. Smooth orange, grapefruit, and floral hop smell - just a bit of dry-hopped green edge. Fruity yeast esters work well with the hops. Zesty citrus hop flavor...flowers, grass, bubblegum, grape, and mango. Medium bodied and fluffy with a dry finish. I'd like to try this with a fruity, funky Brett strain.

Poured into a Haw River teku pint. No freshness date.

A- Pours a medium amber color with a 3/4 inch white head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves large clots behind.

S- Zesty aroma of Belgian yeast and citrusy hops that blend together so well. Notes of lemongrass, orange peel and bubble gum.

T- Tangy and bright with the hop flavor and bitterness coming in at the front and the yeast finishing a bit sweet. More spice characteristic with the hops tagging along for the ride and lending an herbal quality.

M- Crisp and vibrant with a dryness from the lingering hops. Medium carbonation and a lightish body.

O- A very tasty Belgian IPA that's very hop forward but works in harmony with the yeast. My one criticism is that it's slightly too bitter to be largely quaffable but, since it's almost 7% ABV, I imagine it's not meant to be.
