We start with a complex non-lactose imperial stout and add Ghirardelli cocoa powder in the mash and aged on a massive 13 pounds of coconut per barrel.

Picked up a 500ml bottle at the Appalachian Vintner in Asheville 5-26-22 for $15.99. Bottled in late 2021, consumed 8-10-22.

Beer poured black with an okay tan head that dissipated quickly.

Nose is very nice, cocoa forward with a touch of coconut.

Taste is a large roasted malt base with the cocoa and coconut adjuncts providing a nice compliment to the base. Finishes well balanced sweetness wise but with a touch of alcohol heat with the first few sips.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth.

Overall a fun beer to try. Could stand some aging to round out the heat but suspect the tradeoff would be a loss of coconut adjunct flavor.

Some nice elements here but a harsh finish and it feels like this needs a good bit more time in the bottle. This is one of my favorite breweries and they might have the best brewer in the state but this was a bit of a miss for me. Right now this is all cocoa with hot alcohol on the finish.

Appearance: Pours onyx colored with a persistent one finger tan head; leggy, with squiggles and spots

Smell: The coconut makes a statement but there are powerful imperial stout tones, too - roasted malt, dark chocolate and a woodsy tone

Taste: Roasted malt and black bread flavors forward with dark chocolate building; woodsy bitterness, through the middle, with the coconut arriving, after the swallow; harsh and medicinal in the finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: Finish aside, this is a nice use of coconut with a "stout" imperial stout
