We start with a classic imperial stout (circa 1850) brewed with traditional Maris Otter, brown and black malts with loads of Bast Kent Goldings hops. Aged in American whiskey barrels with vanilla beans.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice thick black with minimal head. The nose is full of chocolate, vanilla, marshmallow, bourbon, black licorice, and roasted malts.
The taste is really nice. Much more of a classic imperial stout than one might expect. The bourbon and vanilla play a very minimal role here. Huge amount of roasted malts, coffee grounds, tobacco, oak, and very dark chocolate. Dang - this is a monster! Lovely stout overall!

Despite the vanilla bean additions, this is one of those old school roasted to char big stouts I love so much. Definitely getting some Storm King vibes here. Dark, bitter chocolate and dark roasted coffee dominate the barrels and the beans throughout. The finish is a bitter symphony of ash, light earth and pine, plus hints of cherry and charred oak. I can't say I'm able to discern much if any vanilla. Thanks again Tom, just what I wanted tonight!

Picked up a 500 ml bottle at the Appalachian Vintner 1-23-23 for $14.99. This was released 1-13-23; consumed 1-26-23.
Beer poured black with an okay tan head.
Nose is very nice with roasty malts and a kiss of whiskey.
Tastes is a malt base that is fairly heavily roasted and has absorbed a nice touch of the barrel. Malt base is giving me a cocoa powder profile. Finishes well balanced with the barrel support as this is not heavily hopped. Funny thing is that the vanilla beans are so subtle i am not getting a distinct flavor but rather, a touch of sweetness to balance out the roastiness.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and very smooth.
Overall another outstanding Imperial stout from Mike Karnowski!
