Imperial Stout as it tasted back when it was sent to the Russian Czars. Marris Otter, brown, and black malts along with traditional East Kent Goldings hops. IBU 100.

Pours an effervescent chestnut/mahogany with 2 fingers of mocha colored head. Above average head retention, stellar lacing & very viscous

S: Roasty, dark Choclate, smokey & caramel, some vanilla notes once warmed up. Boozy notes late along with treacle/brown sugar

T: Follows the nose, also molasses, charred grains & dryness & woody hops up front. Charred grains, Baker's Chocolate & dryness as this beer warms up along with leafy hop notes. Finishes very roasty, some cocoa notes, fairly dry with a touch of molasses, strong coffee, leafy hops & licorice on the edge of the tongue

MF: Chewy, subtle carbonation, warming

An in-your-face old school, drinking with the Czars Old School Imperial Stout that delivers across the board

Picked up a 500 ml bottle from the Appalachian Vintner 10-26-23 for $12.99. Bottled presumably in 10-2023 based on Untappd "reviews", consumed 1-23-25.

Beer poured black hole black with a beautiful near perfect brown head that has some great hang time.

Nose is very nice, full of rich heavily roasted malts and dark chocolate.

Taste is near perfection, a large heavy roasted malt base that gives me deep flavored espresso beans and dark chocolate with a touch of licorice with the initial sips. 100 IBU's of hopping ensure that balance and order is maintained with the potential sweetness of such a large malt base. Finish is like chewing on Trader Joes espresso beans back in the day, heavy roast and bitterness.

Mouthfeel is superb, damn this is perfect! Full bodied, creamy, so smooth the palate is on the verge of ecstasy.

Overall, got to believe this is the finest representation of the RIS style i have had!

I gain more respect for this brewery with each of its beers I consume! Purchased this bottle at an Asheville bottle shop, not knowing I would visit the brewery.

Poured into a tulip glass. Deep dark black- brown color with an excellent creamy light brown head and superb curtain lacing. Smell and taste of dark bitter chocolate and licorice. Flavor of French roast coffee and fresh vanilla. Begins with a dark berry fruit background and settles into a rich layered dark chocolate pastry. Magnificent Rich silky smooth feel. Magnificent beer!
