We know Black Habits as the garments of pious people... but they can have a sinister air about them. That's the spirit of our German-style Schwarzbier – it has the look of a Sinner, but the heart of a Saint. While it’s light and pleasant on the palate, the roasted grains bring a rich and complex character into the mix. Black Habit is also sessionable, so you can easily indulge in as many rounds as you please.

Clear, very dark brown with a reddish hue. White head minimal retention.
Mostly roasted coffee in the smell. The aroma is pretty weak.
The roasted malts are up front in the taste. There’s a slight hint of dried fruit. It’s not sweet at all.
Medium light mouthfeel. The finish is dry with some lingering bitterness. For the style, this is very good, it’s better than several imports I’ve had.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear black in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and moderate dark chestnut brown + dark cola brown + amber + ruby red colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall creamy sudsy tan head that slowly reduces to a couple of small patches of medium thick film surrounded by a large patch of very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of dark + roasty + chocolate malts with light amounts of dark fruit (fig + plum) sweetness. Hints of earthy hops.

T: Upfront there are slightly stronger than moderate flavors of dark + roasty + chocolate malts with light amounts of dark fruit (fig + plum) sweetness. That is followed by very light flavors of earthy hops. Slightly heavier than light amounts of lingering roasty bitterness.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a lighter mouthfeel. Enjoyable with nice complexity of malt flavors with roastiness and minimal sweetness.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high light tan head that has very good retention properties.
S: Light aromas of dark malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and is dominated by flavors of dark malts. A light amount of bitterness is perceptible. Some chocolatiness becomes noticeable as the beer warms up.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is rather malty but is easy to drink.

I have a hard time classifying the taste of this brew. I drank it cold from the can. It was wet and cold. Not much flavor at all and no sweetness or bitterness. Very watery.

I believe this beer is a bit underrated.

Poured from a can into a tulip glass. Dark clear brown color with good head and excellent lacing. Pleasant dark toast smell and taste. A hint of licorice and coffee, but a bit thin. Overall, a good black lager.
