Look:

Off white small head dissipates quickly. High carbonation from the look of things. Light caramel in color like a butterscotch candy. Very little lacing on glass

Smell:

Hop resin and marmalade are front and center. Even with no head left on this beer, it has a distinct aroma. Smells like it will be chewy. Just a nice jammy nose to this one. Has a little breadiness to the nose. Is that the oats I wonder?

Taste:

Nice and chewy. This gives you something to think about. That marmalade character is definitely there. A moderately bitter finish. I sense that the oats are there. They add this nutty aftertaste to the beer that is quite enjoyable. It feels like the oats give it good body as well. Grapefruit rind is long in the finish. This is just a very jammy IPA and I am loving that.

Feel:

Definitely chewy with a good amount of carbonation to keep things from being cloying. Hard to find anything really wrong with the mouthfeel here. It’s exactly where I want it to make you feel like you are drinking something with heft but is also not exhausting.

Overall:

Above and beyond the best beer I’ve had from Castle Island. Bigger Ern and their regular IPA were quite underwhelming. The oats are a nice touch here. It is definitely on the heftier side, but I like that in a double IPA. Just a refreshing take on the style that is very jammy and delicious.

Tasting note: the beer I had was canned 11 months prior to my tasting, so I was somewhat lenient in my marks on it. The fact that the beer was still this vibrant almost a year later is incredible.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Had on tap. Pours clear, orange-gold in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is cereal, grain, grapefruit, and orange rind. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Has a sharp bitter aftertaste. Makes for an above average, hoppy beer. I like several other DIPAs better, but this one is decent.

 

 

 

 

 

Pours a beautiful tangerine hue into a tulip with about a quarter finger of white head that dissipates rather quickly leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is grapefruit, slight herbal pepper, and floral notes. The flavor is spot on to the aroma. Begins with a prickly bitter grapefruit flavor followed by slight stone fruits. White pepper and floral notes, slightly reminiscent of Daisy Cutter (that's a good thing). Mouthfeel is spot on for the style, verging on creamy. Overall, I was thoroughly impressed by this beer. As my first experience with Castle Island Brewing, I am left wanting more. The alcohol is all but hidden, and this is a DIPA I would absolutely pick up regularly. Cheers and go Cubs go!
