250ml keg from Dios Corvos Marvila, Lisbon (€3.30):
Opaque black with a 1cm, creamy looking tan head that eventually halves then turns very slightly patchy. Lightly roasted malts & a creamy richness to the nose with some milk chocolate, faint coffee & less alcohol than expected too. Quite rich & chocolatey tasting with caramel, sugars & an faint coffee bitterness. The balance is good & it's quite full bodied with a silky smooth feel, some alcohol towards the end with soft carbonation.

330 ml bottle, from a SPAR shop in Funchal. ABV is 8.5%. Black colour, moderate tan head. Moderate aroma of lightly roasted malts and chocolate. Smooth flavour, roast malts, chocolate and a hint of liquorice, not too sweet.

임페리얼 포터 답게 기대를 저버리지는 않았다. 다만 도수를 조금 더 높였으면 더 나았겠다 하는 아쉬움이..
임스를 아는 사람에게라면, 아주 전형적인 맛이다.

The kind of porter I like: nice body and no cola flavors.
Dark and opaque body with brown foam leaving good lace.
Smeel at the top is very hoppy and subtle in what regards roasted notes, coffe or chocolate as usual dark beers.
Taste however is an explosion in all that plus hops plus great balance.
Best porter/stout in Portugal so far

Totally black. Dark brown colored foam, with some bubbles in it.
In the smell light toasted note, dark malt, a lot of roasted hazelnut. Not bad.
In the mouth, too thin. Too watery.
Some more in the aftertaste, with even sone liquorice and toasted.
Not bad, but it could be better.

Bottle. Ebony with a thick tan head.
Rich chocolate malt and sweet fruit cake.
Tastes like over toasted brown bread including the charred remains. Alcohol soaked stoned fruit present.
Full bodied.
A sipper due to the harsh malt bitterness which the sweetness has difficulty competing with.

(Unfortunately) Poured to a wine glass.
A: The body is opaque black with a generous beige to brown head. Some retention and tons of lacing.
S: The aroma has some chocolate, roasted malts and toffee, but it's mild and a bit unexpressive.
T: The taste if great because it has tons of sweetness coming from malts, toffee and coffee and then it turns to the bitterness of coffee and hops. This change in mouth is really great because it's very very smooth.
M: As told previously, the flavors of this beer are wisely balanced to recall some roundness and uniqueness of flavor. Body is medium to medium high. Carbonation is medium high to high. Bitterness is mild.
O: By far the best Dois Corvos beer I've ever had.

Finisterra Imperial Porter. 8% ABV. 3.50 euro/20cl at Duque brewpub in Lisbon.
A: Creamy khaki colour. Soft and fluffy. Retention is rather good - ~8 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
Body is an opaque solid black. No yeast/lees are visible within.
Appears nice for an imperial porter. Lacks any unique or special attributes.
Sm: Chocolate malts, cream, dark malt sweetness, a blip of Blueberry (don't ask me how), nicely attenuating ale yeast. I find no off-notes or booziness. Hop profile is minimal (to style).
Aromatic intensity is average.
T&Mf: Its creamy, soft feel on the palate accentuates the milky chocolate character nicely. Okay, it's merely medium bodied, but it drinks a bit easier as a result, and it's nice to try an imperial Porter that isn't heavy and filling, even if it's smoothness, wetness, and relative thinness do bring it uncomfortably close to a nitro-dispense redolent texture.
Flavour profile is somewhat shallow and simple for an imperial Porter, but it succeeds in terms of balance and build, juggling the usual chocolate malt, cream, and dark malt notes well. More minor impressions of a blip of Blueberry and malt shake/milk make their way in, but are ill-enough to imbue this ale with the intricacy needed to propel it to a higher level if quality.
Well-carbonated, approachable, and enjoyable.
O: It might well be the finest imperial Porter brewed in Portugal, but it won't dazzle discerning drinkers familiar with even moderately good international expressions of the style. A nice basic example of the style, but more ornamentation is needed for this to make a splash. More pleasant work from Dois Corvos.
Low C+ (3.04) / ABOVE AVERAGE
