Raspberry Jam is a Barrel-Aged sour ale with the addition of Raspberries from Alentejo. It was aged for almost 2 years in oak barrels with brettanomyces, that transformed some of the more complex sugars into intense fruity flavors.

It shows a clear dark golden color and shy white foam head. On the nose, you get some typical brett aromas like barnyard and leather. But once you taste it, you get an intense biscuity-like base with berry and pineapple flavors. There’s a very light acetic feel in a overall funky and sour beer.

Drank on the 17th of April.

Quick notes: Would like it better if it wasn't filtrated, providing more density to the beer which had a really low body but yet a pleasant organoleptic finish, both on aroma and taste.

On-draught @ Dusque brewpub. Reviewed live. Cost was 3.20 euro/20cl (ouch). (Note: I've also seen this referred to as "Rosa Viçosa"

A: No head by the time it was delivered by the bartender. No lacing either. Body is a pale depleted red of low vibrance. Nontransparent; translucent. I see no yeast/lees within.

Sm: Smells like a framboise only with very subdued sourness (~2/10 in terms of intensity). Powdered sugar covered raspberries. Neutral malts are indiscernible, letting the fruit take forward position. More tartness and sourness would definitely improve this.

Aromatic intensity is above average.

T: Matches the aroma, but with a bit more tartness (thankfully). Sourness is disappointingly limited (a 2/10 in terms of intensity), and bacterial complexity just isn't there; I'd bet it's entirely Lactobacillus - and faint at that.

Raspberry character is shallow and anything but vivid/expressive. This brew suffers from a lack of intricacy and depth of flavour.

Mf: Acidity is a bit above average, but it's not a smacky or puckering mouthfeel. Smooth, wet, somewhat refreshing, overcarbonated, light to medium-bodied.

There's no harmony of texture and taste here. Approachable texture, but it fails to accentuate specific notes from the flavour profile or to elevate the beer as a whole.

O: Drinkable but disappointingly shallow. Sourness and tartness need to be cranked up for this to be more effective, and more commitment to the raspberry would be apt. Not a bad effort, but it won't find international acclaim at its meagre level of quality. It's nice to see Portuguese breweries putting out sours, though.
