330ml brown glass bottle with dark green label and an unbranded pry-off crown cap. Purchased at BEERA in Sofia, Bulgaria.
15 Plato. Best before: 13.12.2016 (surprisingly optimistic for a beer intended for an April event).
Reviewed live as an IPA per the label. This isn't my first Blek Pine beer, so expectations are below average.
HEAD: Pours nothing but foam, even when properly side-poured as gently as possible; overcarbonation is anticipated. Fluffy and soft-looking, with a nice even consistency and a fair complexion. Off-white in colour. Leaves no lacing as it recedes, which takes about 12 minutes.
BODY: Translucent copper of above average vibrance. Clean, lacking any visible yeast, lees, or sediment.
Appears overcarbonated. Overall, it's a pretty typical IPA appearance, lacking any unique or special characteristics.
AROMA: Pine, biscuit, caramalt, floral character, pale malt.
Hop profile is all pine and floral character; I detect no citrusy, resinous, juicy, fruity, or grassy character.
Aromatic intensity is average. Suggests a balanced albeit simplistic IPA.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Pine and evergreen lend this a sappy hop character, but the mouthfeel (fortunately) shies away from stickiness. It is slightly oily, though. I'm not too keen on the hop profile, to be honest. But to its credit, any bitterness disappears beneath the pale malt sweetness, keeping the bitterness/sweetness balance in check.
Somewhat shallow for what it is, and certainly simple for an IPA. Flavour duration is average, as is flavour intensity.
Texture is smooth and wet, with a bit of tingly coarseness in the early second act. Overcarbonated as signaled by the appearance, but it's not egregious to the point of being sharp or biting. Aptly medium-bodied, with moderate weight and heft on the palate.
It's not a gestalt build, but there's limited cohesion of flavour. Lacks a perfect harmony of texture and taste, but the former suits the latter to some extent.
OVERALL: A drinkable forgettable IPA from one of Bulgaria's only craft breweries. As always, it's nice to see more IPAs being brewed in the Balkans, but fare such as this won't keep me coming back for more - especially when drinkable macros in the Bulgarian market are considerably cheaper. I'm glad I tried it once, but like the rest of the Blek Pine offerings I've had, it's below average.
