Bottle to snifter. Some spillage (hard to say if this was infected due to no knowledge of dates and the agave makes me think that may have been a
The appearance was a fairly dark brown close to black color with a small eggshell white foamy head. This slid off at a good pace and left a little bit of concave lace.
The aroma, whoah! This is quite different for an impy stout but is this a wild ale? Strong agave notes try to make a good play against slightly stronger Dutch chocolate whiffs rolling into a touch of maple syrup notes.
The flavor is extremely weird and complex to bring the sour/tart fruity agave to the maple syrup while pushing the Dutch chocolate forward at the same time. Dry cocoa powder seems to pummel all of that as the aftertaste ends up being mostly sour.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Good carbonation while leaving some sticky fruity agave features clinging to my tongue. Finishes with the agave and Dutch chocolate.
Overall, perhaps one of the oddest beers I've ever had. Sure, we have to go with calling a dark sour ale but yes, that ABV sure does want to make this an impy stout. So, just throw your hands up and think outside the box of whatever style you want or think to be and drink and enjoy!
