Achieving Orbit, weighing in at 9.2% is our native fermented dark rye ale featuring North Carolina heirloom rye malt and a blend of flavorful dark malts. This rustic refined ale was fermented and aged in regional bourbon barrels with our blend of natively collected yeasts and then soured with our locally cultured lactobacillus. The result is a subtly sour, complex, full-bodied sour ale with notes of dark fruit and just a hint of bourbon barrel character to round out the flavor.

Brownish pour, dark reddish crimson when held to the light, sharp clarity. A finger of creamy eggshell foam lasts for a while, then fades to a thin surface skim.

Aromas of dark forest fruits, light acidity, soft malt and woody oak. Flavors of tart lychee and blackberry vinegar, rye malt, rustic and moderately sour, though tempered by the oak a little bit. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, finishes dry. Overall this is an interesting Oud Bruin with exotic fruitiness and pleasant malt complexity. Thanks to the mysterious benefactor who left it in my fridge!

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a medium brown color and a very cloudy consistency. There was a quarter inch of foamy, off white, somewhat long-lasting head. Not a whole lot of lacing to speak of.

S: A decent aroma of malt, bourbon, wood, vanilla, dark fruit, and yeast.

T: Tasted of a decent amount of bourbon (and its accompanying barrel), some yeast notes (present throughout, though subtle), a bit of malt (again, a subtle presence), a hint of vanilla), and a fair amount of dark fruit (raisins and plums, in particular). A sour, slightly boozy and interesting flavor. It's like a combo of a brown ale and a sour.

F: A fair amount of carbonation with a smooth, tart finish. Medium-bodied.

O: An interesting and worthwhile beer. Drinkable.
