12 oz. on-tap poured into nonic at Blackwater Draw
L: black with no light but up to light shows a fantastic clear dark amber almost running into purple; head is offwhite to beige, very light colored for a stout; no stick or lace
S: toasted/burnt wood ... lots of wood, charred wood, like a barbecue pit at times; as it warms, gives off some soured, toasted grain; coffee
T: toasted wood ... oak; loads of malt but more bitter than sweet; as it warms, some sweet notes peek in with dark chocolate and coffee prevailing ... coffee here is espresso, very bitter; absence of sweet gives it an almost salty flavor at times
F: light but full, well carbonated ... super drinkable; some might say watery, but I don't. I say perfect.
O: good not great ... it's a bit more bitter than I'd hoped (and at only 21 IBUs, I'm assuming the bitter here is from burnt malt); one note -- while drinking the beer with food, the sweetness really opened up and showed as almost grape soda ... very sweet balanced with salty food. tastes a lot like their coffee porter without the coffee, but don't mistake: it's good and definitely worth trying out.
