Smith & Lentz makes some high-quality beers, but this is a standout. And not just because it’s an uber-popular New England IPA. It’s just a phenomenal beer.
Enjoyed multiple 9 oz. pours in a tulip at 12 South Taproom in Nashville. Body is pale gold with a slight orange hue and a soft chill haze. Nice finger head of white foam that held up reasonably well and left a mild lacing.
Aromas of citrus rind, damp grass, doughy bread, tropical fruit, a little pine, and some dark berries. Definitely NE IPA-ish but somewhat reserved.
Taste is more robust with a big dose of citrus pith and tropical fruit juice up front, followed by lemongrass, green tea, mixed berries, whole wheat biscuit, and a little lemon zest. Very citrusy and fruity but also balanced and dry. Extreme easy sipper with the ABV well hidden.
Feel is a little ore robust than the look would suggest, medium-bodied and silky with just the right amount of carbonation.
When Nashvillians think NE IPA they typically think Bearded Iris. But this is a wonderful representation of the category and very different than the BI profile. I will happily order this one anytime I find it in the future.
