Canned 02/21/25, into a wide wine glass.
Pours a deep gold with copious foam, completely clear. Aroma is heavily grapefruit and citrus peel, strangely juicy. Flavor is interesting. There's a good degree of toasty malt to it which I didn't expect, but the citrus and grapefruit is quite forward. Finish is bready and sweet. Finishes pretty crisp and clean. Mouthfeel is smooth, body is light, and overall, this one feels more like a hoppy amber or red IPA than a true WCIPA. It's quite malty and the hops, while strong and bitter, accentuate the malt flavors pretty heavily.
Since Smith and Lentz is a pizza joint, I feel like this beer is meant to be a companion to one of their pepperoni slices. The malt flavors feel like the perfect counterpart to sourdough crust, and the bitterness and citrus feel like they're meant to cut pepperoni and cheese. Overall, not the greatest IPA, but I feel like I was drinking it out of context. It's well done and interesting, but I feel like this one would be better on draft.
