As a lifelong Pennsylvanian, I am intrigued by the upper. outer reaches of our great & mighty Commonwealth. There is some beautiful countryside up that way & while I have yet to visit Doc G's in DuBois, PA, I CAN at least add some more of their beers to The CANQuest (tm)! This one was procured at The Beer & Beverage Shoppe on Roseville Road.

From the CAN: "Handcrafted by Doc G's Brewing Company"; "Cucumber Kölsch Style Ale Brewed with Cantaloupes"; "A Seasonal Favorite"; "Cantaloupes & Cucumbers! Here's a refreshing twist on an old classic! A crisp Kölsch style ale meets cantaloupe and over 200 lbs of cukes. Kick back, take a drink and feel as cool as a cucumber!"; "Enjoy Cold".

The Crack! of the vent produced a light spritz across my fingertips as it revealed a brimful craft CAN! I always feel like I am getting more than I paid for, ala a Baker's Dozen. My C-Line Glug brought forth two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with good retention, leaving behind nice lacing as it slowly fell. Color was a solid Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose made it quite easy to discern both of the main adjuncts. It was more sweet from the CANtaloupe (you knew that was CANming) than oriented to cucumber, but I could still smell both. Mouthfeel was medium, on the big end of the spectrum for this style. The taste was quite interesting in that now I could really taste the cucumber with the CANtaloupe as more of an underlying flavor. I will say this - you had better REALLY like the taste of cucumbers before going into this. This site's updated Style Guide mentions "... and other nontraditional ingredients", so fair dinkum, but this may not be to everyone's liking. I love cucumbers! My best friend & I, as children, used to shock people with our love of raw vegetables. Not many kids like vegetables & we were scarfing them down in raw form. Even better was when my grandmothers turned me onto home CANning! I really love pickles & they taught me how to make my own while I would eat some of the cucumbers destined for that batch. I really liked the way that the CANtaloupe did not impart an overly sweet flavor. Instead, it was kind of subtle, at least initially. Finish was semi-dry, but now I could really taste the CANtaloupe, especially as it lingered well after the swallow. This was interesting & pleasant, but I wonder how many I could drink before wanting something else. Hmm. YMMV.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Semi-opaque golden amber pour. Thin fizzy white head... falls fast with a rim of lacing.

S: Smells like cantaloupe. Melon... mild sweetness and vegetation. A little off-putting to be honest.

T/F: Follows the nose. Light grains... fairly bland. Strong flavor of cantaloupe/melon... vegetable-ish (maybe the cucumber?) . Not much else going on... light bodied and low ABV.

O: Odd... not a huge fan but if you want a Cantaloupe flavored beer I suppose this would suffice. It's nice and light... low ABV makes it easy drinking. Just a weird flavor that I'm not really digging.
