Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a one finger khaki head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, raisins, cocoa, vanilla, orange and unidentifiable spicing. Flavor is dark toasted malt, grains of paradise, vanilla, cocoa, coffee and orange. Spicy cocoa and orange finish. Medium bodied with light creaminess. This is indeed a different stout. Quite a bit drier than I expected from the long list of additional ingredients, the base is somewhat like a dry stout. There is an uncommon spicing that reminded me of allspice or grains of paradise; somewhat earthy with a little umami. Orange is the next dominant flavor, with lighter evidence of vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa and raisins. Not getting much rum. A bit over-busy, but does project the theme of the name as something exotic and unexpected with a hint of medicinal herbs. An interesting change of pace from the usual stouts.
