On tap at the source.
Pours a cloudy dark brown with a bit of a reddish hue to it and a bubbly tan head that slowly recedes. Earthy light roast and hints of bread and caramel. Clove and astringency kind of ruin it.

Bought 22 oz bottle at the brewery early October, 2020 and drank it a couple weeks later. Easily one of the better beers I’ve had from Lubec, and that’s saying a lot considering I’m not a huge fan of Black IPAs.

Poured a dark but clear black with a half inch of white head, some of which remained around the edges of the glass, and left some nice lacing. Smell was some nice roast. Taste was roasty and smooth, and refreshing. Feel was a bit thin. Not bad.

A note about the style - it succeeds as a Black IPA, but could easily be mistaken as a porter given the roastiness - and I don’t think it would succeed as a Porter. The bottle I bought says “Black Ale” on the label do I think the discrepancy is more clear for future drinkers, and reviewers! Cheers!

Poured into a nonic pint glass, the appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a thin white foamy head that dissipated mildly. Sly lacing. The aroma had some roasty coffee beans and a bigger than normal piney to citrusy bitter hoppiness. Dark chocolate bitterness as it warms. The flavor tries to blend the previously mentioned aromas together but there’s a subtle separation between the hops and the malts. Acceptable but could be better. Mild roasty aftertaste. Quick hoppy bitter finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Roastiness seems tame enough to play with the hops and pull down the bitterness to equate to a subtle smoothness. Overall, not a bad porter, definitely American by style. Flavor could be pulled together a bit more to make this beer truly shine.
