Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a half finger khaki head with great retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, cocoa, light coffee, meathouse smoke. Flavor is dark toasted malt, milk chocolate, drip coffee and smoked malt. Lingering smoke and chocolate in the finish. Medium bodied with light creaminess. The can has this long, rambling story on it about overcooking chocolate chip cookies and not being able to find Alaskan Smoked Porter, and oddly everything in the story is pretty accurate; there are a lot of nice chocolate notes in here with quite distinct smokiness, although smoked malt is a lot more pleasant than burnt cookies. Mentioning the Alaskan porter is a bit brave, as it is a favorite of many, including me, but this does give it a fair run for the money. The malt body here is a little thinner, and it is a slightly lighter ABV, but its chocolate character is a real winner. The aroma has some great smokehouse character that is not quite as intense in umami flavor, although this has a very nice level of smoke. Overall, a nicely made smoked porter that I will visit again.
