Starts strong with a golden color and lively head. This hits most of the right notes in the nose and taste: blonde malts, mild fruitiness, and a touch of honey. This is a new brewer for me, and local to boot. Definitely feeling this lager thing early in spring.

I picked up a six of Key's Helles Lager because I love their common lager so much. Unfortunately I was disappointed. It's not bad, it isn't skunky or bitter, but there isn't much going on here smell or flavor-wise. It is a really light tasting lager that didn't stand out in any way to me. It is certainly better than most of the light macro lagers, but it isn't sold at that price point. I would move on from this one and try their Chesapeake Common Lager -- same price and (almost) ABV but a lot more flavorful.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a dark golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of grains, malts. Taste is grains, malts, a little hoppier than I used to for the style, highly refreshing. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is an enjoyable beer.

On-tap @ Cross Street Market in Baltimore, MD.
Deep gold/pale amber, darker than most Helles I've had, with a thick cap of creamy white head. Good retention and a fair amount of lacing. Mild, grainy malt aroma. Faint herbal hops on the back end. Good balance in the flavor, but the malt never shined through the way it should in a great Helles. Soft, slightly sweet finish. Medium-light bodied and creamy.
Needs a little fine-tuning, but overall a solid effort. I love seeing American breweries taking a shot at this excellent style, but I was missing that combination of fresh, rich malt and crisp, clean lager character.
