i was excited to try a beer from these guys, who look like they have two names, highlander beer and missoula brewing company, i assume thats the same operation, but not quite positive. this is a cheap tasting dark lager that i had a hard time drinking, even with a flavorful steak, its just so sweet that its hard to even appreciate as a lager, and overall its a beer that seems to need a lot more fermentation time to dry out, even half a pint of this and i was over it. the malt flavor is there, which is sort of the thing, it has a classic european dark maltiness about it, light molasses, minerals, and sweet baked coffee cake, but its so sugary that it doesnt really allow any balance from the yeast or any hops that might be present, so not only is it too sweet to drink, but its also one dimensional. its heavy as a result. notes of chestnut, walnut, light cocoa, root beer, and dark bread, its close, its just incomplete. more carbonation would help it, but this just needs to be fermented down more. overall a pretty lackluster first impression from these guys, but ill try more next time i am up that way...
