an excellent example of the style here, maybe the best beer we had in here from an overall quality standpoint, but this place is cool, huge range of styles from classic to experimental, i was impressed. this has a nice lighter brown hue to it from the tap, a couple inches of tan foamy head, and a low reddish glow with some shine to to it, looks spot on. the aroma is more complex than its modest abv would suggest is possible, nutty and roasted to me, earthy with lots of layers, almond, dry cocoa, toffee, smoke, dates, black tea, and english ale yeast, its complex and cohesive and just a little sweet to me. the flavor is equally complex, with the dried fruit element really front and center for much of it, a little more sugar up front, more roast and balancing bitterness later, but through the rest of this its raisin and fig, some toasted warmth there too, a bit of tobacco, and the fermentation is just right, the yeast is bready and old worldy and exactly correct for this grain complexion. smooth to drink, medium bodied, drier later, and nicely carbonated, maybe a little higher than many english examples, i think the extra life makes it all the more drinkable. this is nicely executed and has a high degree of authenticity, a lovely brew in a too often overlooked style...
