Headlong is our contribution to the 48 Beer Project - artist Heidi Geist's traveling project. She's working with 48 breweries across the US to create beers and design awesome labels. The retro-fitted bus that she calls home rolled in to our Canton parking lot, and we got the chance to design a new recipe for the occasion. To read more about the inspiration behind our decision to brew a West Coast style double IPA, check out our latest blog post.
A light orange hue with a slight tinge of haze, Headlong offers an ample nose of freshly zested orange and ripe yellow peach with a classic zing of pine needles and woodsy earth. The palate follows displaying additional citrus forward notes of squeezed red grapefruit and lemon peel interwoven into a supportive, lightly toasted, bready malt backbone. Headlong is medium bodied and provides a pronounced, yet enjoyable bite of freshly cut flowers and peppery pine tips for a balanced finished.
MALT: American 2-row Barley, C-15, Dextrine, Dextrose
HOPS: Simcoe, Centennial, Columbus

This one pours a partially hazy golden orange color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.
This smells like pithy red grapefruit, lemon peel, orange rind, piney hops, and orange.
This is definitely a bit of a change-up for Trillium. It's a well executed West Coast style IPA, with a clean and refreshing bitterness, and a mild orange/grapefruit juicy hop flavor up front. The bitterness balances the beer out pretty well.
This is medium bodied, crisp and clean, with a good level of carbonation, and a high level of drinkability.
It's cool to see that Trillium can still make a unique (for them) IPA.

L - west coast? Pour is a dark amber sunset with slight opacity. Not nearly as hazy as typical Trill fare.
S - smell is a dream. Vanilla and orange candy with strong wintry vibes. Seriously smells like orange Tootsie Pops, chocolate and all.
T - a lot of beers claim that piney punch, but this is straight spruce. Explains the wintry aroma. Deep, fruity caramel cherry chocolateness. Nails the Dubble Bubble flavor better than any other. This would be a great Halloween beer.
F - luscious and creamy; this is reminiscent of the malty west coast IPAs I know and love.
O - I'm not sure I'd call this a "classic" west coast IPA by any stretch, but it does borrow some ideas and infuse other new ones. I am blown away by how much this tastes like the bowl of halloween candy I gave out a couple weeks ago. Orange Tootsie Pops and bubblegum. Amazing.

It is almost a normal trillium ipa with a boost of malt and more of a bitter back. West coast like that - but something about the yeast makes it taste like a trillium more than old school classics. Good beer no doubt, but they really can’t brew a real west coast ipa in their house style
